More people struggle with orthodontic issues than we can count! Yet, few understand the importance of straight teeth and a proper bite. Straight, properly aligned teeth are crucial for a variety of different reasons. For one, oral hygiene is much easier to maintain when all of the teeth have a visible, flat surface area to clean. Furthermore, an improper bite (the way that the jaws match up when the teeth are touching) can negatively impact your TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint). This may cause headaches, jaw and facial pain, and the breakdown of the bones that support your teeth.  (American Association of Orthodontists, 2019)

What Are The Options For Crooked Teeth?

Multiple orthodontic treatments exist for crooked teeth, including (but not limited to) the following:

1. Metal braces

Metal braces consist of metal brackets, wires and rubber bands (and sometimes four metal molar bands). The brackets are affixed (usually via composite bonding) onto the fronts of all of the teeth and connected using a metal wire. The brackets are further secured to the wire using elastics (usually colored or clear depending on patient preference and availability). They are permanently worn for anywhere from a few months to a few years. Orthodontists recommend patients stay away from sticky and crunchy foods that could get stuck in the brackets, and anything that will stain the teeth. Furthermore, decalcified white spots or decay can ensue if proper dental hygiene is not followed.

2. Ceramic tooth-colored braces

Similar to metal braces in the way they are used to straighten teeth, ceramic braces offer a less noticeable look. They are affixed to the teeth using the same similar wire-bracket-elastics system as metal braces, and they are permanent until removed by the orthodontist. The same rules usually apply, including avoidance of sticky and crunchy foods and anything that may stain the teeth causing white spots once the brackets are removed.

3. Clear aligners

Clear aligners are plastic-like trays that are custom made to help realign and reposition the teeth. Clear aligners can be removed for eating and brushing/flossing the teeth and are virtually invisible-making them a popular option. In order to minimize the amount of time that you need orthodontic treatment, clear aligners should be worn 23 hours a day-that means when you are sleeping, too. The length of time that is needed for clear aligner treatment varies, but in some cases, treatment can be completed in as little as six months.

What Are The Benefits of Clear Aligners?

As long as you are a candidate, clear aligner orthodontic treatment is chock-full of advantages! The following are some of the many benefits that clear aligners offer:

1. A virtually invisible appearance

Because the design of clear aligners is clear, no one has to know that you are wearing them!

2. The option to remove them for eating and daily oral hygiene

The ability to remove the aligners to eat and brush/floss your teeth means that you don’t have to compromise when it comes to your diet and oral hygiene. All you have to do is remember to take them out and put them back in when you are finished!

3. No metal needed

Metal wires and brackets can sometimes be a bit difficult to adjust to. The smooth, clear material of the aligners helps to minimize discomfort during orthodontic treatment.

4. Custom made to fit the mouth

Because the aligners are made from a custom impression of your mouth, they are fine-tuned to fit just right! Comfort: achieved.
