June is Men’s Health Month and unbeknownst to many people, men’s dental health can differ from women’s in many ways. According to the Journal of Periodontology, men are less likely to have visited the dentist within the past year than women. Additional research shows that women are more diligent about keeping up with their oral hygiene which may explain their lower incidences of plaque and tartar. For these reasons, it is wholly beneficial for men to gain a better understanding of their risks for poor oral health.

Common Causes of Poor Dental Health in Men

The following causes bring on negative oral health symptoms and conditions:
  1. Higher incidence of alcohol and tobacco use among men
Men are two times more likely to develop oral cancer than women due to their use of tobacco and alcohol. You can reduce your risk for oral cancer by reducing and/or quitting the use of alcohol and tobacco.
  1. Less dental visits result in poor oral hygiene
Men are more likely to wait for symptoms to develop before seeing a dentist, making it to the dentist every six months can prevent symptoms from occurring.
  1. Infrequent brushing and flossing habits
The American Dental Association (ADA) reported that fewer men brush their teeth twice a day. In fact, up to eight percent more women brush their teeth two times daily. The reason for this is unknown, but this fact gives us an idea of why men may be more susceptible to gum issues and decay.

Preventive Actions That Improve Dental Health

  1. Brushing AND flossing twice a day, every day
Getting into the habit of brushing twice a day and flossing daily will prevent plaque from hardening into calculus—the hard bacteria that cause discoloration, tooth decay, and gum disease.
  1. Using antibacterial mouthwash
Instead of using plain water to rinse following your brushing routine, try using an antibacterial mouth rinse. This will help to kill any lingering bacteria that remain underneath the gums and within the mouth.
  1. Reduce the use of carcinogens
Carcinogens are cancer-causing substances. We know that tobacco and alcohol are commonly abused carcinogens, so by cutting these out of your life, you can decrease your risk for oral cancer and gum disease.
  1. Carve out time to visit the dentist for an exam twice a year
Most people only require a dental check-up twice a year if they don’t also suffer from other ailments such as periodontal (gum) disease. This is crucial for the prevention of more serious dental conditions that are costly and painful.
