What to Expect at your First Dental Care Visit

Advanced DDS Hygiene Team 2016

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DENTAL HYGIENE MONTH

Why your Preventative Care Visits are Important?

You get your car’s oil changed every certain number of miles, why not get your teeth checked on a regular basis. Just as your car does, your teeth require maintenance and a professional needs to make sure everything checks out. You wouldn’t want to drive around with a flat tire and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to be walking around with a cavity. That’s why it’s a good idea to go to the dentist and make sure everything is working the way it should be.  At Advanced DDS, we recommend that you reserve your preventative care appointment every 6 months or more frequently depending on what your dental hygienist recommends.

When Should I Visit my Dental Hygienist?

It is recommended to visit your dental hygienist at least every 6 months because gum disease and cavities are preventable. The sooner we identify any potential problems, the easier and more affordable it will be for you. You want to detect dental problems before they become painful. If you are already in pain, it may mean your dental problem is at a more advanced stage. Your hygienist will recommend when you need to come back for your next preventive care appointment. People with a higher risk of gum disease and cavities, may have to see their hygienist more frequently, these people include: smokers, pregnant women, diabetics, those with weak immune systems, and those that have a tendency for cavities, plaque buildup, or gingivitis.

What to Expect During your Preventative Care Appointment?

Before starting the examination or the cleaning, x-rays maybe required. At Advanced DDS, our Green CT Scanner uses 60% less radiation than the standard CT scanners. Your hygienist will use the millimeter tool to measure the health of the bones and gums around each tooth. At Advanced DDS, we provide enhanced cancer screenings using a special tri-mirror that allows our doctors to easily examine the soft tissue in your mouth. Your hygienist will use our piezo tool to gently scrape the tartar off of your teeth leaving them nice and smooth. After the teeth are flossed and polished, you will rinse your mouth with mouth wash and handed a hot towel.

Dental Exam

Your dentist will examine your teeth at least once a year for any dental problems such as cavities and lose or broken teeth. Your dentist will review with you about your oral health. Your dental hygienist will then help you schedule your next preventative care appointment.
