Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be caused by a number of things. It can be affected by the food you eat such as garlic, onions, sweets and acidic food. Sometimes bad breath is caused by xerostomia, also known as dry mouth. Dry mouth is a common problem that most people experience and over long amounts of time can lead to bad breath. An easy fix for this is just making sure your mouth is moistened by drinking plenty of water or chewing sugar free gum. Try to stay away from dehydrating liquids, such as coffee and alcohol.

Smoking and chewing tobacco are hazardous to your health as well as your breath and teeth. Smoking and poor oral hygiene may lead to gingivitis, and when untreated can lead to periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Bad breath along with swollen gums, loose teeth and bleeding of the gums may be the signs of gum disease. If gum disease is left untreated, you may lose your teeth.
